A reader jaded by slasher movies and books might put TED'S SCORE down early. The writing is well done, but the intent behind the story seems clear. Here's a backwoods loony that enjoys raping and killing women, as well as handily taking care of their boyfriends prior. However, if you put this book down early on, you'll be missing out how Coughlin evolves the genre. Upon finishing this book, I thought of it as a morality play in reverse, an immortality play, as it were. By the ending, you'll form different conclusions about the deranged Ted and all the bloody dominoes that have fallen in his small town. This is not to say that Ted is intended to be sympathized with, but rather, understood.Product details

Coughlin has given us here the gift of a traditional horror story, a chronicle of the evil men do and how that seeps into the world around them. His descriptions are brutal and unsparing, and his plotting tight and enjoyable. A real treat for those who grew up reading newsstand paperback horror novels.
This is more than your standard slasher novel. This thriller delivers a great premise, surprising twists, smart and real characters, a heart-pounding climax and all the gore you could hope for.
The book starts off with a bang (or maybe a chop?), but could be mistaken for a pulp horror novel. Then it begins to stand out as the story slows down, taking its time to unfold while developing characters that could have gone to your high school, hung out at your bar, or lived in your neighborhood. The tension builds off the knowledge that such a monster as Ted is lurking in the lives of these genuine small-town folks. And it keeps you up at night knowing that such a monster could exist.
I found myself caring about all of the characters, and by the end of the book I could understand and believe every decision, mistake or misguided action. This book left me shaken, reminding me that there is no dark or horrific act that people are incapable of committing, and it left me questioning what I was capable of myself.
The gore disgusts, but is not gratuitous. Every drop of blood is justified in painting a picture of living hell that these people must live in and live with. But the gore is not what makes this story so chilling. The mental state of the characters is what terrifies, and the thought that these characters could be any stranger in the night, a friend, a loved one, or even you yourself.
Written by Daniel P. Coughlin (who also wrote the screenplays for horror films Lake Dead and Farmhouse), Ted's Score is a great page turner. Ted is a serial killer that's been hunting around rural Wisconsin for more that 30 years. Jules Benton and David Miller are teenagers almost done with high school and in young love. Ted needs a score, and they fit the bill. Sounds like a pretty standard setup right? Wrong. The book goes in directions that even this well versed horror fiend didn't see coming. The characterisations are vivid and realistic. In fact, reading the beginning chapters about the young love birds reminded me of my own youth, and with painful accuracy. The characters were so realistic and engaging that I could have read a whole book just about the Benton family, with no crazy serial killer action at all. I felt hungry to find out more and couldn't put the book down.
That being said when the killing happens it's a very graphic and bloody affair. Guts are spilled, heads are severed and blood gushes in huge torrents. The book is hardcore but the graphic nature of the killings melded well with the style of the book and made the book have punch and power rather than being exploitative and sleazy. Don't get me wrong, I dig a sleazy book every now and then but this one is filled with too much emotional realism to be labeled as simple pulp.
Ted's Score is a sharp, realistic thriller and a great debut novel. Comet Press may not put out a ton of books but that's because they value quality over quantity. That dedication to their readers is clearly evident in all of their releases. That's what always keeps me coming back for more.
Scary book. A fast read as your flipping through pages trying to read what happens next. Definitely enjoyed this book!
I loved how the story would jump from charecter to charecter.
It kept me on my toes and also minful to keep my doors locked and always do a backround check on all my dates!
I didn't like this book just because it's loaded with skin-tingling horror. I love it because I could be sipping on a cup of coffee while the events are happening unknowingly in my back yard. There's a certain realness to it that spooks the spine. The main character, Ted, makes me quiver. He reminds us that people like Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer are from real life while Buffalo Bill and Leather Face aren't. Ted's authentically demented thought process is scary. I could feel empathy for the other characters. And somehow, oddly, the story hits a tender moral fiber...The pages of this book move quickly. It's something from the Stephen King school of horror writing. And that's my school.
This book was awesome!! Ted is seriously twisted and this horror story is great! Not for the faint of heart!! The author really puts a lot of detail into the writing to really make you feel as if you are watching it unfold. You really get to peer into each character. The end had so many twists and turns I was a bit shocked. Highly recommend, in my top picks!!
