Most fifteen year old girls are trying to figure out who they are; I’m trying to stay alive long enough to figure out what.
I’ve always been on the run. From my guilt about the things I couldn’t change, and from the voice in my head that won’t let me be normal. But yesterday Tommy and I were in a car accident on the way home from school. When I woke up, Tommy was gone, and so was the world I grew up in. Now I’m running less in a metaphorical way, and more in a “pick up the pace if you don’t want to die” way. Why? Because my eyes are blue, and I’m lost in a fantasy world where that means I’m different. It means I might not be human. It means I should already be extinct, and someone called “The Regent” is determined to make me that way.
I need to find the way home, and before I do that, I need to find Tommy. He’s only in this mess because of me. I can’t do it on my own, but it’s hard to know who to trust when everyone keeps trying to kill me.

This story sucked me in.I don't normally read fantasy books so I was a little reluctant, until I started to read it. The author was so descriptive I could see and smell the Kae-world. I could feel Sera's pain and turmoil throughout.
I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Between the Layers The Traveler Book 1 eBook SaraJean Panek Reviews
I received this book as a gift.
Between the Layers is a magical, time-bending read that transports you to another world, one that feels almost Medieval and heavy with lingering spells. Some parts are almost whimsical while others are full of anticipation and quiet dread, the sense of impending doom and hostility. It’s the kind of epic story that draws you in and keeps you captive, eager for more.
The Kae-world is like a Medieval, dystopian, fantastical mix of so many elements that are so insanely unexpected that it reads like an epic fantasy, a cross between Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time, a more tame Game of Thrones and Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey. The fae are not so abstract that they seem outlandish or awkward, they’re like real, strong people with developed personalities and ideals that happen to be not entirely human.
The flashbacks, the dreams, and the creepy voice in Sera’s head at a vein of horror and mystery to the story that’s almost foreboding and really sinister. They’re detailed premonitions and there are many horrifying, grotesque creatures that sprinkle the story with just the right amount of fear.
The history of the people, the story of the blue eyes, everything about this world is a vibrant, wonderfully detailed and plotted mythology that would be amazing to read as its own story.
The Posmen, the toddlers, and the other violent, vicious enemy creatures are truly terrifying almost like rabid zombies. Their descriptions are chilling, the way their bodies move and how they sniff the air hungering for blood is enough to give you goosebumps.
Sera is completely authentic, her reactions, her internal dialogue, she’s exactly the scared, scarred teenage girl she’s supposed to be. She does fly off the handle sometimes but she’s loud, she voices her opinions, she’s compassionate and let’s everyone know what she thinks. While Sera is not confident, as the story unfolds she learns what she’s capable of and she’s so much more powerful that she ever expected. Sera has a kind heart, one that shys away from killing even the most vile of enemies and she’s courageous beyond measure. She faces her deepest fears and risks everything, though she does this with a substantial amount of complaining.
The secondary characters had distinct, vastly different personalities that when brought together were an explosion of conflicting opinions and interactions. The group scenes were full of life.
Trage and Sera are fun to read together. The way they butt heads and fights is just begging for a future love interest. The scene in the lake when they’re splashing around, playful and full of joy is so cute.
CONS
Some sections were slow and lagged a bit where not much happened.
The shift from the first world to the second was abrupt, leaving very little information about Sera’s life previously. In that way, it feels as though this is the starting point for Sera’s life and her past is no longer a reality, more like an abstract yet extremely realistic dream.
There are so many questions left unanswered that it was a little infuriating, I wanted to know so badly about the boatwoman, the gods and goddesses, these entities were so intriguing and added mythology to an already unique fantasy story. Sera’s connection to these magical beings and the mechanics of how this happened make me incredibly eager for the next book. The necklace was also only briefly glossed over. WHAT IS IT?!!!!!
Between the Layers is a cute fantasy read that is like a bit of Iron Fey series mixed with Alice in Wonderland. The story begins with Sera getting into a car accident and waking up in another land. The people there are confused by her arrival and some of her are convinced she is the lost Princess who will save them.
In the beginning the 15 year old Sera comes off as very dramatic. She just wants to return home, really close minded to what the people are telling her about the land she is in. The fact that most of them don't believe her also makes her frustrated and overwhelmed. She does begin to make friends, animal friends as well.
The story is a fantastical read with imaginative world building and strange creatures, both beautiful and deadly. There were parts of the story that made me laugh (The Toddlers) and made me cringe (The Honey Pot) really pulling me into the story and this other world of strangeness and danger.
It takes a lot of coincidences and convincing that just maybe Sera is the Princess, even if she's not could they still get her help to fight? I would recommend this book as a cute, clean read that is fun and at several times had me gasp aloud as it was unexpected and exciting.
My favorite character was Reeky and there are a lot of different characters to fall in love with. Possibly a introduction to a love interest? Sera is put into dangerous situations more than once and she shows a lot of strength by the end of the story. I am looking forward to see what happens next!
This book was a quick but fun read. I was sad to learn that the next book is not even finished yet.
I loved this book and I cannot wait for the second book in the series.
Wow...It's like girl learns she is really a princess...with a twist. I expected to be amused, I did not expect to be enthralled. I will impatiently wait for book 2.
Awesome book! I couldn't put it down. No more teasing, Sara! When is book two set to be published? I'm hooked!
Such a great book! It combines several of my favorite genres into an exciting book of it's own... Very excited for the next book in the series! )
This story sucked me in.
